So is there any courses your rescue team needs to go ?
There is no WSQ courses that you can go for confined space rescue. Fun fact is that you do not need to go for any external rescue training for this.
Even if you are willing to spend the money and for external rescue courses, you will likely not be able to fulfil the requirement.
You need to fulfil the training requirements in SS 568 which have to include the followings:
1. Occupational first aid & CPR
For this course, you cannot do in house. It has to be done via certified bodies which provides the official first aider certification that MOM requires.
2. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
You might find it weird that you need training PPE. For most PPE, employees can wear it by themselves.
However for PPE such as respirators requires the vendor to do fit test and some basic awareness training to wear the respirator.
That being said, if your company has someone that is certified by the vendor to conduct such fit test and respirator awareness training, you can do it in house.
You might also be using Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) which also requires training for the rescue team so that they know how to operate the SCBA.
3. Use of rescue equipment
If you buy rescue equipment, you must ensure that your rescue team is trained to use the equipment they are suppose to use.
Usually vendors that sell you such equipment can conduct awareness training for your rescue team. They can even issue a training certificate to the rescue team.
This training can come free if your relationship with the vendor is good or you have to pay a fee.
4. Confined space hazards
Your rescue team must be aware of the hazards inside a confined space. Now for the multimillion dollar question. Are they required to attend WSQ confined space training before they can enter the confined space?
The answer is NO. You can conduct the training in house.
Final thoughts
As you can see, to fulfil the requirements by MOM, you have to do different trainings, which there are no public rescue trainings that cover all these in one package.
Courses like first aid needs to be done specifically by certified training providers, specific PPE and rescue equipment needs to be trained by the equipment vendor.
External rescue courses do not provide these in their rescue courses. Well unless you customize the training package specifically for your company then that’s a different story.
That’s why, you can go for whatever external rescue course you want to go but, in the end, you still need to follow what is in the Singapore Standard and train them according to confined space emergencies your company has.
